"As stated by Li Hongzhi, the founder of Falun Gong (also known as Falun Dafa), The Epoch Times "was established by Dafa disciples for validating the Fa." The term Dafa disciple refers to practitioners of Falun Dafa. .. A US Congressional report lists the newspaper as a Falun Gong affiliated media source.
James Bettinger, Communications professor at Stanford University and the director of the John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships, said that their consistent writing about Falun Gong in the same perspective, without examining Falun Gong, contributes to people's perception that it is not credible. The paper denies all accusations of bias, stating that "We are not funded by Falun Gong, we don't speak for Falun Gong, and we don't represent Falun Gong."
Although Li Hongzhi has not financially benefited from his teachings according to Falun Gong,[23] his [Li's] wife, Li Rui, was reported in the Wall Street Journal as buying a Queens residence for $293 500 in June 1998, and another house costing $580 000 in May 1999. Until Li began transmitting Falun Dafa in 1992, he and his wife each earned less than $500 a year at a state-owned grain company in Jilin, China.
