CITAT (Gossen Ruda @ 19-07-2012, 15:21)

CITAT
They are overmarketed factory-made pop with no actual talent, they sing like chipmunks on helium. They don't write their own songs, they don't play the instruments. Their image is all about sexualizing schoolgirls, and many of them are underage -that's what actually bothers me more than anything. They're also cheesy and incredibly obnoxious.
I wish legitimate Japanese musicians would get half the recognition that they get.
I want to ask Japan Today, why are you so obsessed with them? You always run articles on them about the most mundane events. I can understand an article every once in awhile, since they are famous and relevant to Japanese pop culture, but I seriously play a game when I log in to this website - "Find the useless AKB article!" Almost every day, I win.
CITAT
It's not so much the existence of the group, but the fanfare, worship and attention that is paid them. It's because this group is as hyped and ubiquitous, and a household name much to the extent Michael Jackson was to me when growing up. Or as the Beatles were in the generation before me. And in AKB48's case, it is completely undeserved. All the dozens of girls in AKB48 put together don't have a fraction of the talent that John Lennon had in his left pinky finger. Yet when I ask Japanese youth who their favorite music group is, so many respond with "AKB48." What a total waste. There must be extremely talented Japanese musicians out there, but the vast majority of Japanese people will never hear of them. Of course the west has had it's share of substantively empty yet popular music (Katy Perry, Backstreet Boys) but they don't dominate media like such bands are permitted to do in Japan. Mainstream success has been reached by serious bands like Radiohead, The Roots, Nirvana, etc. Even Lady Gaga and Madonna have some talent that has propelled them to where they are - unlike AKB48 who has already reached legendary levels of success for reasons that I will never comprehend.

Thrir existnce is irrelevant to mature humans with common sense. Being bombarded wirh truvial stuff regarding them on this site is what annoys. This is an adult site not for 10-15 year olds who may like juvenile things like this.
Seeing them constantly isannoying them and this weird hero worshiping lolita fetish is out of place ith this site which in other respects seems aimed at normal adults.

I don't hate them. Just find their popularity a sad indicator of the taste of people here. But the reasons I feel so are as follows.
Obvious oversexualization of very young girls is creepy and sick.
Essentially no talent beyond their being "Kawaii"
The profoundly bad, overproduced music (using the term losely here) they perform.
The ominpresence of them in everything from TV adds to government.
Their extremely creepy 30+ year old male fan base.
That they inspire young women and girls in Japan to aspire to similar characteristics.
That they are just another of Japan's endless shallow trends with no cultural value beyond commercialism.
That they are inescapable, just try to go a day in Tokyo without being exposed to their images or sounds.
But all these are really criticisms of much of Japan's fluffy and shallow pop culture. Before moving here I didn't think it was possible to have a more shallow pop culture than my home country. But I was wrong. Japan takes gold medal in this regard.
