Saskatoon Berry Eastern Serviceberry, Western Service Berry June Berry, Juneberry Shad-bush
Saskatoon has a long and important history of usage extending back to pre-settlement times of Western Canada. Indigenous people used the fruit in soups, stews, meat dishes, pemmican and dried cakes. Arrows and pipe stems were made from the shoots. Juice was used to cure stomach ailments, and it is a mild laxative. Eye and eardrops were made from mature berries. Boiled cambium can be used as a disinfectant. Root infusions were used to prevent miscarriages.
