Eftersom det verkar att jag har skapat lite förvirring här genom att uttala mig om sånt som jag inte är expert på, så bifogar jag delar av ett ínlägg från en lång diskussion i magnoliagruppen på Yahoo:
When inducing polyploidy with colchicine, I once read that oftenonly one of the three histologic layers of cells in a plant becomespolyploid (I don't use all the Latin words here since I would have tolook them up and it'd take an hour). That means that a plant can haveseveral ploidy levels at once, depending on where on the plant onelooks. Often, it seems that if there is a level of normal cells left, thesemay in time take over and make the plant 'normal'.Another important aspect is, I think, that the cells involved in makingpollen and seeds are connected with a certain one of these histologiclayers. If that particular layer is left diploid, the "polyploid" plant willstill give offspring with normal chromosome numbers.
